Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about SWIM.
How the platform works, who it is for, how projects are verified and how your data is protected.
01 About the Platform
What is Sustainable Water Impact Maps (SWIM)?
SWIM is an AI native water stewardship platform. It maps water challenges, shows which organisations are active in each area, and connects the organisations funding water projects with the implementers delivering them on the ground. SWIM is where water projects are found and funded. Philo Exchange (PhiloX), our blockchain native platform, is where each funded project's impact is tracked and reported.
Who is SWIM for?
SWIM is open to everyone working on water: corporate funders, foundations, development banks and governments; NGOs and project implementers; independent evaluators; water stewardship consultants; and researchers, universities and other organisations with an interest in water impact.
What types of projects are on SWIM?
SWIM is water solution agnostic. It covers WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), replenishment, reuse, efficiency, conservation, infrastructure, technology and nature based solutions. Listings include completed, active and potential projects, so funders can see both track record and what is ready to fund next.
How does SWIM relate to PhiloX?
They are two layers of one ecosystem. SWIM is the discovery and matching layer: it helps you find the right project in the right place before funding. PhiloX is the blockchain native delivery and verification layer. Once a project is funded, the funder can choose to bring it onto PhiloX, where smart contracts and real time impact reporting create an auditable, immutable record of delivery and impact over time.
How is SWIM different from water risk and footprint tools?
Risk and footprint tools help a company understand its own water exposure. SWIM helps organisations act on it by finding and funding credible projects in the basins that matter to them. Many organisations use both.
02 Joining and Access
How do I join?
Visit philox.io and click "Join SWIM". The request takes less than two minutes. The SWIM team reviews every request and, once approved, guides you through next steps, including a short onboarding call.
Does it cost anything to join or use SWIM?
No. SWIM is free to join and use. There are no subscriptions, memberships or platform access fees.
Why do you approve every account?
To protect the integrity of the platform. Approval keeps out spam, fraudulent projects and non credible users, so everyone on SWIM can trust who they are dealing with.
Can I invite my colleagues?
Yes, at no cost and with no limit on users. When you invite someone you choose their access level: Owner (manages members), Editor (edits content and projects) or Viewer (view only).
03 How SWIM Is Funded
If SWIM is free, how does it make money?
SWIM charges a one-off success fee only when a project is successfully funded through the platform. If nothing is funded, nothing is charged. Listing projects, browsing, using the maps and sending requests are all free.
Are there any other fees?
Only if a funded project is brought onto PhiloX for ongoing tracking and reporting. PhiloX has a setup fee for the project infrastructure and integration, followed by an ongoing fee for monitoring, tracking, and reporting the project over its lifecycle.
Does money move through SWIM?
Funding agreements and payments are made directly between the project funder and the project implementer.
04 Using the Platform
What do the pins on the map mean?
Green pins are organisation sites, such as water intensive facilities of companies with water stewardship goals. Blue pins are water project sites. Purple pins are potential project sites linked to a solution. Each layer can be switched on or off. Organisation site information is compiled from publicly available sources and is provided for informational purposes. Inclusion on SWIM does not imply endorsement, participation or verification by the organisation unless expressly stated. Facility ownership, operation and location information may change over time.
What data layers are available?
More than 100 map and data layers covering water stress, water availability, water quality, groundwater, drinking water and sanitation access, basin boundaries, climate and geopolitical factors. Sources include the World Bank, WRI Aqueduct, WHO/UNICEF JMP, HydroBASINS and the WWF Water Risk Filter. Every layer links back to its original source and shows how current the data is, and layers are refreshed on a scheduled basis as the source data is updated.
Can I look at a specific basin or catchment?
Yes. You can navigate HydroBASINS geographies from major river basins down to Level 7 sub catchments/watersheds, so every stakeholder can work from the same boundaries.
How do I find projects?
Three ways: browse the map around your sites or priority basins; search the Project Marketplace and filter by organisation, location, project type, stage, volumetric benefit, cost per cubic metre and cost per beneficiary; or ask SWIM AI.
What is SWIM AI?
SWIM AI is the platform's built in assistant. It combines SWIM's project, organisation and map data with public research to answer questions such as which of your sites face the highest water risk, which projects best match your priorities, or what the biggest water challenges are in a given country. Each organisation receives SWIM AI credit when it joins.
How do I contact an implementer or a funder?
Open the project or site and click "Request More Information". Choose a reason (for example, propose a project, explore funding or discuss collective action), add a short message and attach documents if needed. Requests are reviewed by the SWIM team and then passed to the right organisation. This protects every user from unsolicited approaches and means the requests you receive are qualified.
Can I be notified about new activity?
Yes. Use SWIM Alerts to be notified when there is new activity in your areas of interest, and save your preferred map views to return to them quickly.
Can funders flag their priority sites?
Yes. Funders can mark sites as high priority, which helps implementers and co located funders see where action is most needed.
What is the Solutions area?
Solutions are repeatable interventions an implementer offers to the market, such as rainwater harvesting, desalination or wastewater treatment, rather than a single project. Each solution shows where and at what scale it can be delivered, indicative cost and the funded projects it has already delivered.
Can suppliers or service providers list products?
No. SWIM is a marketplace for water projects, connecting funders with implementers. Equipment, products and general consulting services are not listed.
How do I add my projects?
Create projects one at a time, or use the Import tool to upload spreadsheets, PDFs, Word documents or case studies. SWIM AI maps the information into the right fields for you to review. Each project needs at least one site, and you can add photos, videos and documents such as evaluation reports or licences.
05 Project Quality and Verification
Can anyone publish a project?
No. Before publishing any project or solution, an implementer must evidence at least one project funded by a credible organisation. Until then, the organisation can use every other part of SWIM and save projects in Draft, but cannot publish them. The same bar applies to every organisation, large or small. Solutions must also be linked to at least one credibly funded project.
How do I know a project's claims are reliable?
Every project shows its level of assurance. Projects start as self assessed, meaning the implementer has reported its own expected benefit, confidence level, duration and base year. Any funder or implementer can then request an independent evaluation. Once a qualified evaluator completes and signs off the work, the project carries a verified badge. Funders can filter for independently evaluated projects.
Who are the evaluators?
SWIM is evaluator agnostic. Implementers and funders choose their own qualified evaluator, and evaluators must meet the same credibility bar as implementers, with at least one credible past evaluation on record. Evaluations can be done before funding (pre qualification) or periodically after a project goes live. Evaluation requests are currently coordinated by the SWIM team.
Does SWIM require a specific measurement standard?
No single standard is mandated, as SWIM is both solution agnostic and evaluator agnostic. Independent evaluators typically apply Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting (VWBA). Real time delivery data for funded projects can be monitored through PhiloX.
What are the project lifecycle stages?
Every project carries one or more of five stages: Planning, Funding, Implementing, Impacting and Completed. A project can sit in more than one stage, for example operating while raising funds to expand.
How is project information kept up to date?
Each project shows when it was last updated, and the marketplace can be sorted newest first, so current projects rise to the top. Funders can use "Request More Information" to ask an implementer for an update. We encourage implementers to update monthly and to use SWIM as their day-to-day project tracker.
How do you avoid duplicate listings?
SWIM AI runs a duplication check during project onboarding, flagging nearby or similar listings and giving implementers the option to merge them.
06 Data, Privacy and Security
Where does company and site data come from?
To give users a head start, organisation sites are preloaded from credible public sources, starting with regulatory filings and CDP disclosures, then company websites and sustainability reports, cross checked against other public sources. Project data is uploaded by implementers themselves. Map layers come from recognised third party sources. SWIM does not produce its own map data.
My organisation's sites are already on the map. Can we change them?
Yes. Once your organisation is onboarded, you take ownership of your sites. You can edit, reclassify or delete them, remove your logo, and make any or all sites private.
Who can see my data?
You decide. Information can be Public (visible to all SWIM users), Restricted (shared only with organisations you select, such as your consultants) or Private (visible only to your organisation). Many organisations use SWIM privately as an internal project registry.
How is my data protected?
All data on SWIM and PhiloX is encrypted at rest and in transit. Our security practices are aligned to ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II principles, with row level access controls, certified infrastructure, daily backups, monitoring and network security.
07 Support
How do I report an issue or suggest an improvement?
Use the "Share Feedback" button in the side panel. You can attach a screenshot and highlight the area of the platform. Every piece of feedback is reviewed by the SWIM team and used to prioritise development.
Do you offer onboarding support?
Yes. New organisations are offered a 30 minute walkthrough, and our team can help set up your organisation, invite your members and load your projects.
08 What's Coming
What features are in development?
Funder led collective action requests, where one or more funders can specify a location, challenge and requirements and invite implementers and co funders to respond; an evaluator marketplace for requesting and comparing evaluation proposals; and basin pages with local news, activity and AI ranking of the most pressing water challenges in each sub catchment.
